Germany: Hohenzollern & Neuschwanstein

We didn’t plan on a trip.  But T had to use his holidays or it literally gets wasted.  So we decided, quite last minute, on a roadtrip.

Wow.  I don’t know where to begin. It was 14 full days of amazing.   Every time I travel, and every single day of this trip, I felt so humbled to be able to visit all these places.  Places that I never even knew existed.  Things that I never even dared to dream of.  And I always, always,  feel so grateful to my family, my parents, and my husband.

We left very late on Saturday afternoon and drove almost 6 hours to Stuttgart.  And then on the first day of our trip – we saw so many things, that by the end of the day, I felt like the trip was coming to an end!

We started out early at 9 and drove through beautiful lush greenery.  And then, suddenly, before we knew it, we were greeted by this little silhouette on the top of the hill…

the closer we got, the more surreal it looked!

This castle literally reminded me of the Sleeping Beauty movie we used to watch as kids.
It was so beautifully perched on the hill, and it was deserted.

I had not done ANY research on the trip.  Seeing this castle really took my breath away.  It was like a huge surprise, cos T insisted that we visit the castle, and I had no idea just how lovely it would be.  After this, I didn’t even care about the real “Walt Disney” castle that we were going to visit, how can you beat this right?   I mean, it was on top of a high hill, looking down on what looked like Hobbit land, on a beautiful summer’s day and the AIR was SO CLEAN.  You could feel how clean the air was!  And to top it off – it was almost empty.  There were about 20 persons in total in the castle, so it was so private and intimate.

this is an ariel view of the castle itself.
In the couple of hours we were there, MANY little red jets flew over and circled the castle
I think it’s an at attraction you can pay for

After a meh Italian in a little town on the way, we dove on towards Neuschwanstein, and was greeting by these beautiful mountains.  Soon we were in a cute little town – but OVERFLOWING with tourists!!!! Suddenly I felt SO glad we did the alternative castle.  It was a completely different vibe.  If you ever visit Neuschwanstein, you must book in advance.  After a 20 mins wait, we were told that the next English tour was only at 9pm!!!  (you can only visit the inside with a guided tour).  We debated it cos we didn’t want to kill so much time in between, it was only 3.30, but decided, oh well, we’re already here right?  And the lady printed ticket… and it said 4pm!!!  Ah we were so lucky, the lady said it was strange, but we just got lucky!Smile

It was still bright after dinner so we decided to take a drive around.  We passed by a camping ground with a lake view and saw the most beautiful sunset  I’ve ever seen.  I was worried I wouldn’t be able to capture it as we saw it, but I feel proud that it turned out just as we saw!   And after I had taken a gazillion pics, we held each other, just enjoying the view, the calm, the beauty.  I couldn’t believe how much we had seen in just ONE day and it was just Day One.
